The rise of Maddie & Tae has been hugely impressive, as the duo of Madison “Maddie” Marlow and Taylor “Tae” Dye have become one of the breakout artists of the past two years thanks to their bro-country beatdown “Girl in a Country Song.” That song explicitly criticized the sexist objectification of women in the genre (“We used to get a little respect/ now we’re lucky if we even get/ to climb up in your truck/ keep our mouths shut and ride along”) and they proved their range with the touching ballad “Fly.” Their debut album Start Here was just released to critical acclaim.
